Does your child speak Spanish or wish to learn a few words? Do you know any Spanish-speaking children who may enjoy coming to Storytime? The Greenwood Public Library is interested in presenting bilingual Storytimes on the first Saturday of each month for children ages 4 and up. Each story would be presented, page by page, in both English and Spanish. Afterwards, children can fill in a coloring page. The Greenwood Library is looking for interested people; so, if you and your family are interested in this service, please call the library at 302-349-5309.
In an effort to meet the educational and cultural demands of our Community, the Friends of the Greenwood Public Library have officially kicked off a capital campaign to raise the funds needed to expand and improve our library and cultural center.
Increasing the size of our current building from 3,000 to 10,000 square feet will allow our professional library staff more room to handle the current flow of patrons and to continue to provide quality programming for residents of all ages, while gaining additional space for educational and entertainment materials and community meetings, which is notably lacking in our region.
For several years, the current library space has been inadequate to meet the needs of our patrons and staff. Office space is overcrowded, with one small room housing four staff members, a large copy machine and CD and video equipment. There is a definite lack of floor space for the display of books and the use of computers, which limits what can be offered to the community. Room for children and teens is sorely lacking. There is precious little space for quiet study and leisure.
Last year there were more than 50,000 patron visits to the Greenwood Public Library, with an average day recording more than 200 patrons. Visitors are attracted to the library by its unique programs for patrons of all ages, such as the L.E.A.P (Literacy Education Assistance Pups) program, which helps youth who are struggling to read feel secure and improve their skills as they read to dogs; Story Time, a preschool program for ages birth to 6 years old; and Bound by Books, an adult book discussion group facilitated by library staff. Unfortunately, the lack of available space often times makes it difficult to serve all those who want to participate in these great programs.
The cost to complete the new library is over $3 million, with state and county revenue streams covering all but $200,000. The responsibility to raise the remainder falls into the hands of the Friends of the Greenwood Public Library, and we really need your help. In addition to the funds needed to complete the project, the Friends are committed to raising enough money to support additional operating costs that will occur once the new library opens.
To make a donation, complete the form and return it to the address listed. Your support is appreciated!
