September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Greenwood Public Library wants to make sure that all residents in Greenwood and the surrounding areas have the smartest card of all – a library card. A library card opens up a world of opportunity for people of all ages, providing access to books, magazines, music, movies, the Internet, and much more.
During the month of September at the Greenwood Library, persons of all ages signing up for their very first card will be given a bag of goodies and a chance to enter a drawing to be held October 1 for a $20.00 gift card good at Tamburelli’s in Greenwood.
Getting a library card is easy. Adults 18 and over simply need to present a photo ID with current address and fill out a registration form. Children 17 and under need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will present their photo ID with current address, assist their child with the registration form, and then sign it.
Do-it-Yourself Home Repair Workshops
The Greenwood Library will be offering a series of do-it-yourself home maintenance and repair workshops beginning Monday, Sept. 13. The 8-week series, taught by “master handyman” Wayne Carter of Seaford, will cover home maintenance and repair in three basic areas; plumbing, electrical, and carpentry. The initial program at 6:30pm on Sept. 13 will be an introductory session covering basic tools and equipment needed for home repair and maintenance plus a rundown of the specific topics to be covered in the following seven weeks. All of the sessions will be held on Monday evenings and are free of charge. Space is limited and pre-registration is required, so be sure to call 349-5309 or come by the library to reserve your spot! The Greenwood Library is located on Route 16 in Greenwood, just east of the railroad tracks.
The Greenwood Public Library will begin offering the Bierley MonoMouse – an easy to use, hand held electronic magnifier – as part of an innovative loan program designed to help visually impaired members of the community.
The Bierley MonoMouse Hand Held Electronic Magnifier is available to be borrowed from the library in the same manner as borrowing a book. A visually impaired patron can now have the opportunity to read any book from the library in the comfort of their own home.
The magnifier, which is similar to an oversized computer mouse, is ergonomically designed to fit comfortably in the palm of a user’s hand. It connects to any television via the attached standard RCA plug and then the large blue button is simply pressed to start reading. Whatever the magnifier is moved across appears large and clear on the television screen, making small text especially easy to read.
“There are many people who would like to use the library but believe, rightly or wrongly, that because of their sight loss, libraries no longer have anything to offer them,” said Robin Miller, Adult Services Librarian. “With the Bierley Magnifier, our patrons with vision impairment can now borrow any book from the library and enjoy reading it at home.”
A library patron simply borrows the MonoMouse magnifier along with a book of their choice, returns home, plugs the MonoMouse into their own television and is then able to read the super sized text right on the screen. When the magnifier and book become due, the patron returns them to the library as usual. The program is designed to help people to regain their independence and reignite their desire to read.
